The Monarch Butterfly

This is probably the most popular kind of butterfly and the one that most people imagine when they think of butterflies. The monarch butterfly lives in open areas like fields, meadows and marshes. Monarch butterflies are very numerous but they are always in danger of extinction. The main problem is that human beings can jeoperdize the habitats of these precious butterflies species.

Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly

The next butterfly on the list of most popular butterflies is the tiger swallowtail butterfly! Most people picture that the wings of a butterfly form a bit of a tail on the bottom half. The name "swallowtail" is based on a type of bird, a swallow bird. The typical look of a tiger swallowtail butterfly is that of a tiger, with gold and black stripes on the wings.

Zebra Swallowtail Butterfly

The zebra swallowtail butterfly is very similar to the tiger swallowtail butterfly except that instead of having the colors of a tiger it has the colors of a zebra on its wings. This is extremely interesting considering that butterflies seem to share the same similarities as animals from completely different parts of the world.

Queen Alexandra's Birdwing Butterfly

This type of butterfly is actually the biggest butterfly in the world! The male butterflies of this species will usually have wider wings than the female of this type. The Queen Alexandra's Birdwing butterfly is a very endangered butterfly so pictures of this butterfly are very rare and special.

Of course there are tons more kinds of butterflies out there, and there are probably even more that we have yet to discover and document.
